Microchipping
Microchips are tiny, but they can provide a significant benefit to pets and their families. Our animal hospital in Brunswick offers pet microchipping for animals of all ages and sizes, because we know how important it is for them to stay connected to their families, no matter how many miles separate them. Millions of pets manage to run away and get lost every year, and many do not return to their homes. With a cat or dog microchip, your pet’s chances of being found and traced back to you are much higher.
How a Microchip is Placed
Microchipping your pet is a simple and quick procedure, with no sedation required. In fact, it’s actually quite painless. The microchip is transferred through a needle and placed under the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades, where it should remain for life. It’s no bigger than a grain of rice, but it possesses a unique ID number that you need to register under your name, address, and phone number.
Registering Your Pet’s Microchip
As soon as your pet has their microchip, you need to enroll it into the PETtrac Pet Recovery Network provided by the chip’s manufacturer, Avid. Just go to avid.com to get started!
Reading a Cat or Dog Microchip
If your pet gets lost and a good Samaritan brings them to another animal hospital or shelter, their staff can use a microchip scanner to read the ID number on your pet’s chip. They wave the scanner over your pet to detect the chip, which responds to the scanner’s radio waves and transmits the ID number back to the scanner. They can then enter this number into the database to locate your information.
